What Is the Duolingo Test?

In 2012, Duolingo started its quest to make language learning more accessible. Using a technique they say builds long term retention, the game gamifies skill-building. Their lessons are often tailored to the end targets of the actual user. In essence, there would be different needs for someone wishing to order at a foreign restaurant than someone hoping to learn a different language.

In 2014, in terms of offering an alternative to other language review examinations, Duolingo launched the test of their English skills, which can be prompt and costly for test-takers.

Any machine that has a camera, microphone, microphones, and secure Internet will take the Duolingo English test at home.

Completing the exam takes between 45 to 60 minutes and costs $49, which includes complimentary school admissions score updates. Test-takers require a visa, driver's license, or government ID that is able to show on camera their identity.

The English test by Duolingo is adaptive, meaning that the interpretation becomes more challenging with each question answered correctly. The next question is more clear whether a question is answered wrong. This adaptability is what, in such a brief time, makes the exam so detailed.

Students are tested by separating true from false English words, completing missing letters from a portion of the text, explaining an image, answering questions or reading sentences orally, answering written questions, and typing out comments they hear.


At the end of the exam, Duolingo also provides a "video interview," where test-takers can opt to chat about one of two subjects. Similarly, the chance to have a writing study on one of two subjects is given to them. These portions are ungraded, but sent to schools as an additional way to show off certain English language proficiency together with test scores!
